The quote comes from a patient at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Toronto, where a wonderful initiative has been developed. The hospital has a poet in residence who regularly works with patients and staff on writing poetry. Rhonna Bloom, a psychotherapist helps people with their feelings and thoughts. Poetry is my great passion.
I know first hand how words can calm, heal and aid in deciphering feelings for people. The symbolic and metaphor language of poetry is so therapeutic, taking us to another level of understand- ing. 8 years ago, I was fortunate to be chosen to be a poet in residence at a local café. It was part of the Australian Poets Commission initiative, Café Poets’ to bring poetry to the people.
I regularly sat observing patrons and the cafe’s ambience, listening quietly to conversations around me. I’d leave blank cards for patrons to write ideas for the on- going project. It was a great experience and I learnt a lot about human nature, myself the craft of poetry. As April is National Poetry Month, if any café, hotel or organization is interested in pursuing this idea, I can be contacted by emailing: firstname.lastname@example.org.
